Returning from Maternity Leave and Anxiety
It’s different for every mom. If you are an anxious mess, (like I was) I want to tell you this.
It’s hard, but it gets easier. It’s also a time in your life to be cherished and savored. Enjoy your babies Now
I used affirmations to calm me and get through the tough days in the beginning, going back to work. It helped me to be “in the moment” at home and actually enjoy being a mom.
What Are Affirmations?
Affirmations are words or statements you say (read, write, repeat…) that help you to practice a way of thinking that is supportive and encouraging. Simply, They’re meant to help you feel better. Every thought you think causes you to feel an emotion. Affirmations are a focused way of guiding your thinking to create more positive emotion.
I used them when returning to work. I still cried the first couple months, but it helped.
Creating Affirmations
Affirmations are certainly not one size fits all. They need to resonate with you. They have to be at least somewhat believable for you. “Try them on” to see if they actually affirm calm and encouragement within you.
My Tips for Using Affirmations
- First make sure they “work” for you (see above)
- Write them in the present tense. Focus on now.
- Don’t just read them silently. Read aloud when possible (in the car?)
- Write them out in a journal. Writing can help ou retain them as well
- Repeat them often. Your brain needs to practice this new way of thinking
- Pair them with movement when possible. Say them to yourself while walking (without looking weird) he he
- record yourself saying them on your phone and then listen back to them
Make yourself some visuals, draw symbols of what the affirmation means to you.Okay, I went too far there.
Do you notice these tips are the same strategies we teach our clients? SLP’s rock- don’t we?
